ADAMAS certifies the largest sustainable logistic centre in the Benelux

For the DSV Moerdijk project Adamas oversaw the BREEAM-certification from the design phase up to and including the completion with a 4 star Excellent label as the result.

The DSV Moerdijk project is one with many superlatives. For instance, the building was constructed in 5 phases, and no fewer than almost 2,500 people from over 600 companies worked on it. The building contains 3 x the amount of steel that is included in the Eiffeltower and it covers a floor area of 240,000 m2 with 190 dock doors. In short, a truly impressive logistics complex that cannot be overlooked. Due to the urban design concept, the facades are interconnected, creating a stretch of 1,2 km along the motorway. Especially in the evening when the lighting illuminates the facades in a rhythmic pattern, you can clearly see how the building functions.  How do you make this demonstrably sustainable? A question we tackled energetically with our regular partners. Ultimately, it does not deal with these volumes, but again with details. Fortunatly, developing and building sustainably has clear guidelines for this, which we demonstrably used with the internationally recognized BREEAM-method. In this way, the lighting at night is not only an urban design element, but has it also been developed with environmental sustainability in mind, which does not harm the existing bat population. This approach also led to an energy reduction on the lighting of 85%.

In the design phase a lot of attention was given to the materialisation of the building in order to minimize the environmental impact of such a large complex. In particular, for this project sustainable concrete mixes were developed and implemented in the foundation and floors. The CO2 impact was kept very low that way, something which is not always the standard for such an industrial project. No fewer than 12,904 solar panels have been installed on the roof which will enable this complex to meet its own energy needs for the most part. As construction contributes to the national waste mountain for almost 50%, it is important to recycle as much as possible. In this building Vrolijk achieved a score of 98% recycling, which has a considerable impact on a better environment with these volumes.

We therefore look back with justifiable pride on an exciting construction period of only 425 building days, which has also reduced the CO2 impact considerably. It is precisely by joining forces, making clear agreements and communicating openly, successful projects arise. We  would, therefore, like to thank DSV, Vrolijk and all parties concerned for their efforts, trust and pleasant cooperation to make this sustainable result possible.
